Klaus Kollmai one of the founders of high school soccer in Kansas receives a national award. I have never met the man (as far as I know), but never the less he is one of several men that brought soccer into the school system. I was one of the beneficiaries from his hard work. My Jr year at East was a club year with Alan Shepherd as head coach. The next season it became a letter sport. I can say I was one of the few players that help start the sport, but it was the hard work & vision of Kollmai that made it possible.
Thank you Kollmai!
Their are several articles posted on VarsityKansas.com with all the details, it is a good look at the man & the history of our sport here in the metro area.

Local high school soccer official Klaus Kollmai was one of eight people recently named a Distinguished Active Official by the National Federation of State High School Associations.
Kollmai helped found the Kansas Junior Soccer Federation in 1977 with the purpose of making soccer an official Wichita-area high school sport. Two years later it happened, and Kollmai became the first soccer coach at South.
"I grew up in Germany. When I came over here I had a soccer ball and nobody really knew what it was," Kollmai said. "As I grew up and became an educator, I felt like there was an interest in it."

It also made me think about a story I wrote when I first got here. It ran Sept. 27, 1996, all of three weeks after I started at The Eagle right out of college. I quoted Kollmai and Bobby Bribiesca, another unbelievably nice guy. The story is below.
